Step 1: Get all four bureau reports
Never dispute based on just one bureau. CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF often show different data — the discrepancies themselves are grounds for correction. Free copies are available annually from each bureau's website.
Step 2: Identify the error precisely
Vague disputes get rejected. Instead of 'this loan is wrong', write: 'HDFC Personal Loan Account #XXXX7890 shows DPD 60 in March 2024. Payment was made on 3 March 2024 via NEFT UTR HDFCXXXX with confirmation SMS. Attaching bank statement and lender email.'

Step 3: File dispute with the bureau
Log in to each bureau's dispute portal. Select the specific line item. Choose the correct dispute reason from the drop-down (this matters — 'Not my account' triggers a different investigation than 'Incorrect payment history'). Upload all supporting documents.
Step 4: File a parallel dispute with the lender
Send a signed letter to the lender's Nodal Officer with the same evidence. Under RBI rules, the lender has 30 days to respond. The parallel filing puts pressure on both sides and dramatically improves resolution speed.
Step 5: Escalate if rejected
If the dispute is rejected without addressing your evidence, escalate to the RBI Banking Ombudsman via rbi.org.in — this is free and highly effective. Consumer Forum is the next step for stubborn cases.
